Dear Leafs Families:

I am writing to assure you that we are closely monitoring the situation with respect to COVID-19/Coronavirus to make sure that we are being responsible during this crisis. Our members' health and safety is our number one priority.

After consulting with Canlan, other area clubs, and representatives from AHAI, I do not believe that it is necessary at this point to alter our tryout schedule provided that we take a few additional common-sense steps to be safe.  Having said that, this is a fluid situation and I will let you know if any changes are required.

The Leafs Hockey Club is in daily contact with Canlan Ice Sports.  They are committed to taking extra measures to ensure the cleanliness of the rink, which includes cleaning the locker rooms and common areas more often, and using appropriate disinfectants.

Further, we have asked Canlan to open all available locker rooms during tryouts to reduce the number of players in any given area.  You can help in this regard by dressing at home to whatever extent you are able.

At this point we have hand sanitizer available to anyone walking into the facility.  Hand washing is obviously a very important part of prevention as is making sure you do not come to the facility if you are sick.  If you are not feeling well, please stay home.  Please contact our Hockey Director Butch Treiber at hockeydirector@leafshockeyclub.com if your skater will not be at tryouts due to an illness.

USA Hockey issued the following statement and information on the virus on March 10th that I encourage you to read:

https://cdn1.sportngin.com/attachments/document/564d-2132285/20-006_USAH_COVID-19_Memo_MARCH9_3.pdf#_ga=2.120061384.1572736029.1584039241-1162461237.1584039241

Most relevant at this point is USA Hockey's instruction that:

  • Use individual water bottles; do not share them
  • Towels should not be shared in any way

To that end, we will not have any community water bottles available during tryouts.  Please bring your player to the rink with their own water bottle and encourage them not to share it with others.

Many of you know that USA Hockey made the unfortunate, but necessary, decision to cancel the upcoming National Championships due to the amount of travel involved for many participants. AHAI and NWHL have both issued statements stating that they do not plan to cancel any of their scheduled activities at this point.

The Leafs are committed to following the instruction of medical professionals and our governing hockey bodies to make educated decisions. I will keep you updated on additional information as it is available.

Thanks for your cooperation,

Jeff Cesarone

President
